What's Next after Mixed Age Classes?
Rhythm Kids is our new music, movement and drumming program that helps children complete the pathway of early childhood music development from birth to age 8. Rhythm Kids is segmented into two classes, one for children ages 4-5 and the other for children in kindergarten, first and second grades.
Kids know what they like. For four- through eight-year-olds, it's telling silly stories, playing games (with rules, of course!) and sharing new things. Our interactive Rhythm Kids Online classes tap into how big kids are wired to learn. Music games, rhythm pattern play, drumming, and more engage their creativity - and inspire them to explore their musicality in new ways, both during and outside class.
This Fall 2020, children will have class online 2x weekly for 25 minutes. A drum of some sort (ideally a djembe) will be required and we can help you find a Djembe through a few vendors where discounts are available for RK Families. Parent attendance is optional but encouraged. All families will receive a songbook, CD, download as well as access to interactive online video tutorials. If you've taken Music Together® classes, some of the music will be the same but explored in new ways! However unique to Rhythm Kids are a whole new collection of animal themed rhythmic songs and patterns.
If your child is 5, 6 or 7 and you are wondering what the next step should be in their musical development, please check out our Music Together Big Kids™ classes. Each 60-minute, 10-week class is geared to the interests and abilities of 5-, 6-, and 7-year-olds. The program blends the elements of Music Together® parents and children love with newat are developmentally appropriate for this age group.
Big Kids classes lay the foundation for Basic Music Literacy, complementing music instruction in school or instrument lessons, and leading to a lifetime of joyful music-making. It may also be the appropriate next step for your children after mixed-age classes but before formal music instruction. The curriculum includes solfège, solos and ensembles, folk dances, harmony singing, vocal development, and drumming. In a safe, fun environment, your child can experiment with new activities like conducting and improvisation, story songs, and game songs.
Each family receives a Big Kids songbook, CD, solfège cards, and HomePlay activities, so that the entire family can continue the fun and learning at home and parents can stay connected with what the child is learning in class.
Parents are welcome to come to any class, but they must be participants (not observers). However, parents/caregivers must come to the child's first class. They are also encouraged to come to the last class of every semester (show and tell) and are encouraged to come to the last 5-10 minutes of every class for the lullaby, Goodbye, Ask Me About and distribution of that week's HomePlay pages. Two adults (the teacher + one parent) will always be present in class in order to accomodate the needs of this age group. If you would like to volunteer as a classroom parent, let us know!
